Check Engine Light
WE KNOW THAT A LOT OF SHOPS OFFER A FREE CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT DIAGNOSTIC. IS THAT TELLING THE ENTIRE STORY, OR IS THERE MAYBE SOMETHING THAT MAY BE UNCOVERED?
So the check-engine light is what we call a MIL light, which is a Malfunction Indication Light. Which means that there’s something that’s not working properly in the vehicle. Most places just pull it up and tell you what kind of codes, which will identify what area into which you should be looking. And we find that there’s a high number of people that repair cars, just based off what that light tells them and where it’s leading them. Unless you investigate, a thorough diagnostic–unless you troubleshoot all aspects–you can have a center that is telling you, coming from your engine light is bad, and you change that sensor, and you can have that same sensor coming back on again, and you can change that sensor again. And we have many customers that are frustrated with that. What that sensor is giving to the computer is saying, “I’m getting some bad information somewhere.” The computer is saying, “There’s some bad information.” It could be information flowing through that sensor, which means if there’s a problem beyond that sensor, or there could be a problem with that sensor. So unless you physically test, which takes manpower to do, then there’s really no way of knowing. It’s only a guessing game. So the cheapest way is to guess at it; and sometimes it’s the most costly way, because you end up with repairs, and repairs, and repairs. Or the proper way is to pay that charge and have it tested properly; have a technician, who is qualified, who has paid a lot of investment for their appointment in order to troubleshoot exactly what that problem is.
ARE YOUR TECHNICIANS ASC CERTIFIED?
Yes, we run certified technicians. We have certified technicians, but we require them to continue getting certified in areas–of new areas of the new technology they’re coming out with in new cars.
SOMETIMES ENGINE LIGHTS SHOW THERE’S A PROBLEM ON A CERTAIN CIRCUIT. BUT DOES THAT ALWAYS MEAN THAT THERE’S A PROBLEM WITH THE PART? COULD THAT BE INTERFERENCE INSIDE THAT CIRCUIT?
There could be a lot of problems. There could be communication coming into that circuit. That means the circuit is sending out bad information, which would trigger an engine light. Unless you troubleshoot all aspects and test it, there’s really no way of knowing. It’s a guessing game. We have ways and technologies in the auto-service industry that we have data-mined garages all over the United States. And so, a car comes in with this specific problem. And we can pretty much narrow it down to minimize the cost to the customer at the time that we spent troubleshooting, or finding the problem. And we can start troubleshooting with the vehicle’s highest problem. And that’s an easier way of troubleshooting than simply going down the flow chart.
SOUNDS LIKE YOU’RE SAYING THAT IF THE CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT IS NOT PROPERLY DIAGNOSED, YOU COULD STILL HAVE PROBLEMS COME UP AGAIN?
Yes. You could have an oxygen sensor giving a bad code. And I’ve seen cars come to our garage, to Sal’s Complete Auto Service, saying, “I’ve been down the road. I had an engine light on. They replaced this oxygen sensor, and it’s just this stupid oxygen sensor that’s staying on.” And when we looked into it, it may just be that the car needed a tune-up, because it’s dumping a lot of raw fuel, and the oxygen detects the air-and-fuel ratio. And if it’s detecting that you’re dumping a lot of raw fuel, it’s going to give a malfunction to the computer. And so replacing that oxygen sensor doesn’t fix the problem. It’s not even the manifestation of the problem. The problem is that you’re dumping more fuel because you need a tune-up.
LET’S SAY THAT YOU DISCOVER THAT THERE’S A PROBLEM ONLY UNDER LOAD, OR UNDER CERTAIN OTHER CONDITIONS, SUCH AS GOING UP A HILL AND UNDER LOAD. WHAT IF YOU SUSPECT THAT TO BE THE CASE? WILL YOU DO A TEST, OR WILL YOU ROAD-TEST IT, CHECK IT OUT BEFORE AND AFTER?
Yes, not only do we road-test it; we’re able to hook up with our scanners and watch everything live. I just had a car in Sal’s Complete Auto Service two weeks ago that had its transmission replaced by the dealer, a Chevy dealer, and it came back with the same problem. Every time it went up a hill, it dropped a load and went into limp mode. (Limp mode means the computer is collecting a lot of information. And if it gets bad information coming in that says it’s going to do major harm to some aspect of the vehicle, it shuts the vehicle down so you can’t drive more than 30 miles an hour.) And it turned out that what really needed to take place was the throttle body was caked, and we needed to clean up the throttle body. Cleaning up the throttle body, changing the spark plugs on the vehicle took care of the vehicle.

READY TO FINALLY UNCOVER WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR VEHICLE? SAL’S COMPLETE AUTO SERVICE IS READY TO DO THE JOB.
KNOWLEDGEABLE SERVICE FROM SAL’S COMPLETE AUTO SERVICE.
Did you know that an engine replacement can be one of the costliest repairs you can make on your car? Worse still, most engine malfunctions can be avoided with better preventive maintenance. Sal’s Complete Auto Service takes the welfare of your engine seriously and offers several services to prevent the need for future engine replacement.
An engine is a true marvel, consisting of hundreds of moving parts and electrical systems operating at high temperatures alongside complicated mechanical components. It’s important not to forget the hard work we demand from our engines every day.
Engine Repair, Service, and Maintenance
The timing belt is the engine part that needs the most common major service. Belts should be checked at 60,000 miles and again at 100,000 miles.
Oil leaks are a clear sign of an engine in need of service, and they’re almost always the direct result of poor maintenance. Seals become hard and dry and fail to protect against fluid loss. Leaks can lead to catastrophic engine failures.
A clean engine is a happy engine. Make sure you get fluid flushes and fuel injection cleanings as recommended by the manufacturer. Sal’s Complete Auto Service can tell you definitively when your car is due.
Tune-ups can be a good resource for your vehicle. We provide a tune-up with a 24-month/ 24,000-mile warranty. A tune-up means different things for different cars, but it usually involves spark plug replacement, spark plug wire inspection, setting of the timing belt or timing chain, a thorough, diagnostic inspection of engine parts, and the replacement of air filters and fuel filters where applicable.
Your engine is a complex machine, and other components will break down occasionally. Sal’s Complete Auto Service can provide repair services for your ignition systems, ignition wires, crank case, fuel pump, water pump, sensors—including the oxygen (O2) sensor— distributor cap, and rotor.
AT SAL’S COMPLETE AUTO SERVICE, WE HAVE MORE THAN 21 YEARS OF AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE EXPERIENCE.
“I was looking for a place to bring my car for service and became aware of a new business on Hastings Way in Eau Claire, Sal’s Complete Auto Service. After going online to get their phone number, I called to set up an appointment for an oil change. I was informed about the free shuttle service available if needed. After the oil change was completed, Sal explained the type of oil used and when to return for another oil change. Professional quality job and courteous service. The search is over. I just found the car service center I’ll continue to use, thanks to Sal and his staff.”
“All I can say is omg, SHUT UP! AMAZING ATTENTION TO DETAILS!! I was in the beautiful, clean waiting area as Sal was talking to a young guy who just heard some noises in his car and needed an oil change and was so polite. He said he would be in and out in less than an hour if he wanted to wait or HE COULD DRIVE HIM HOME !! Yes, I said drive him home. The guy was like, really? I was like, NO WAY! Then he said he could come get him too when it was ready, its part of their service to you and it’s FREE !! Not only that if you break down and need a car to use while its getting fixed they do that too !! I found out the hard way when mine had to be serviced and I pay for “car rental” on my insurance it only covers if you have an auto accident, really !! I couldnt’ even get a car rental from the car dealership I bought the car from. Huge hassle since I’m in sales and need it to work all day. While I was there I said I do need tires and he said to wait till Saturday if I could as he was going to be running a big sale. WHO DOES THAT ANYMORE-HONESTY! He could have just sold them to me and made more and not said a thing. I even have a set of roters and pads a friend was suppose to put on for me but hadn’t had time so I asked if he would put them on and the price he quoted me to do it was amazing. On top of that he asked what would you like to drink. I am a huge believer that its the small details that matter that keep people coming back. With the hundreds of car places to go to its hard to know who to pick. If he takes that good care to do the little things you know he’s knocking it out of the park on the big things. I am in sales and I have to say I have never had a business owner be so polite and say have a seat and really listen to you. What an amazing, impressive experience… SAL YOU JUST WON MY BUSINESS AND I WILL BE BACK ON SATURDAY!”
